Can Criticism Be Good for Us?

Can Criticism
Be Good for Us?

One day a teacher wrote on the board the following:

9 X 1 =  9

9 X 2  = 15

9 X 3 =  27

9 X 4 =  36

9 X 5 =  45

9 X 6 =  54

9 X 7 =  63

9 X 8 =  72

9 X 9 =  81

9 X10 = 90

When she had finished she looked at the students and saw they were all laughing at her because the second equation was wrong.  The teacher then said the following:

I wrote the second one wrong on purpose because I wanted you to learn something important.  This was for you to know how the world out there will treat you.  You can see that I wrote the RIGHT thing 9 times, but none of you congratulated me for it, you all laughed and criticized me because of one wrong thing I did.

So this is the lesson:

The world will never appreciate the good you do a million times, but it will criticize the one wrong thing you do - so don’t get discouraged.  Always rise above all the laughter and criticism - stay strong.

No one likes to be criticized but overcoming criticism can be totally doable! Here are some tips:

Mindset Shift

Try to see criticism as an opportunity for growth rather than a personal attack. It's a chance to learn and improve.

Focus on the Message, Not the Delivery

Sometimes criticism comes across poorly, but there might be valuable feedback hidden within. Try to extract useful insights regardless of how they're presented.

Reflect and Learn

Take a step back and objectively consider whether there's truth to the criticism. Is there something you could do differently or better next time?

Seek Constructive Criticism

Encourage people to provide feedback in a constructive manner. Constructive criticism focuses on specific behaviors or actions and offers suggestions for improvement.

Develop Resilience

Build up your resilience to criticism over time. Remind yourself of your strengths and achievements to maintain confidence in yourself.

Choose Your Response

You have the power to choose how you respond to criticism. You can either let it discourage you or use it as fuel to motivate improvement.

Surround Yourself with Support

Lean on friends, family, or mentors who can provide encouragement and help you put criticism into perspective.

Keep Moving Forward:

Don't let criticism hold you back. Use it as a springboard to propel yourself forward and continue pursuing your goals.

Remember, everyone faces criticism at some point. It's how you handle it that makes all the difference!

Try it and see!
